Every drop counts

Water is life. It grows our food, powers our homes, and sustains every community.

As climate change intensifies, cities are being forced to rethink how they manage this vital resource.

Cape Town, South Africa, faced this challenge head-on during the water crisis of 2015-2018. After three years of drought, the city of four million came dangerously close to “Day Zero” – the day taps could run dry.

To avoid catastrophe, the city launched its ThinkWater campaign. Using every channel imaginable, from social media to loudhailers on utility trucks, it kept residents informed, engaged, and united.

Citizens responded with extraordinary commitment. They cut household use, fixed leaks, and lived within strict daily limits.

At the same time, the city reduced pressure in pipes, installed water management devices, and explored new sources like desalination and groundwater.

Together, these efforts pushed back Day Zero.

Cape Town’s story is a powerful lesson: with transparency, innovation, and collective action, cities can adapt to climate-driven water change – and ensure not a drop is wasted.
